The sharing economy is changing the world and quickly disrupting old line industries. www.zipments.ca is a disruption of the same day courier industry using casual, part time workers or “lifestyle couriers” who are “going that way” to deliver retail goods from stores and personal deliveries. Safrata started this company in 2013 believing in the distributed intelligence of many.
More recently, Safrata purchased West Coast Sightseeing in 2009 – a 25 year Vancouver based tourism business. The first initiatives at West Coast were walking and bike tours and a partnership with the BC Breast Cancer Foundation donating $1 per visitor on the Big Pink Bus Tour. This is in keeping with triple bottom line business practices. The company is now the largest bus tourism business in Vancouver www.vancouversightseeing.com.
In 2000, Safrata acquired Novex, a Richmond-based courier company out of receivership. The strategy included being a leader in sustainability practices with the addition of hybrid vehicles to the company’s fleet of over 100 vehicles and in 2010, the company added Canada’s first 2 all Electric Trucks to its fleet. NOVEX wins awards for raising the bar and setting new standards of environmental ethics in a business historically not known as being environmentally sensitive. www.novex.ca.
In 1996, Safrata founded Eaglequest Golf Centers Inc., and built this into a chain of golf centres across North America. In 1998, with revenues at $40 million and 450 employees, Eaglequest was purchased by an American competitor for $105 million.
An Al Gore trained speaker for An Inconvenient Truth and a member of the Mayor of Vancouver’s “Greenest City Action Team”, Safrata remains an active champion for sustainable business practices.
Safrata is currently a Board member of Tourism Vancouver, a past Chairman of Outward Bound Canada and a Member of the Young Presidents Organization. As a member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team from 1973 to 1978, he competed in the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.
He lives in Vancouver with his wife of 30 years and four children.
